The Death of Green-Eyed Monster: A Hamish Macbeth Mystery
Plot Summary
The Death of Green-Eyed Monster is the 34th installment in M.C. Beaton's long-running Hamish Macbeth mystery series. The novel is set in the fictional Scottish Highlands village of Lochdubh, where Police Constable Hamish Macbeth finds himself investigating the murder of Priscilla Halburton-Smythe, the wealthy and eccentric owner of the local stately home.
Priscilla is found dead in her own drawing room, apparently killed by a blow to the head. Hamish quickly discovers that Priscilla was not well-liked in the village, and there are plenty of suspects with motives for wanting her dead. As Hamish investigates, he uncovers a web of secrets and lies, and he soon realizes that the murder is more complicated than it first appears.

Characters
- Hamish Macbeth: The protagonist of the novel, Hamish is a kind-hearted and intuitive police constable who is well-respected in the village of Lochdubh. However, he is also a bit lazy and disorganized, which sometimes leads to him making mistakes in his investigations.

Themes
The Death of Green-Eyed Monster explores a number of themes, including:
- The dangers of prejudice: Priscilla Halburton-Smythe is a deeply unpopular figure in the village of Lochdubh, and her murder is met with a surprising lack of sympathy. Hamish's investigation reveals that Priscilla's unpopularity is due in large part to the prejudices of the villagers. They are quick to judge her based on her wealth and social status, and they are willing to believe the worst about her.
- The power of secrets: As Hamish investigates Priscilla's murder, he uncovers a web of secrets and lies. He discovers that many of the villagers have something to hide, and that these secrets are preventing him from finding the truth. Hamish learns that it is important to face the truth, no matter how painful it may be.
- The importance of forgiveness: In the end, Hamish discovers that the key to solving Priscilla's murder lies in forgiveness. He learns that it is possible to forgive even those who have wronged us, and that forgiveness can lead to healing and redemption.
The Death of Green-Eyed Monster is a well-written and engaging mystery novel that will appeal to fans of the Hamish Macbeth series and to readers of traditional British mysteries in general. Beaton's writing is sharp and witty, and she creates a cast of characters that are both believable and relatable. The novel's plot is well-paced and suspenseful, and the ending is both satisfying and thought-provoking.
If you are looking for a good mystery novel to read, I highly recommend The Death of Green-Eyed Monster. It is a well-written and entertaining novel that will keep you guessing until the very end.
